Lesson 4: Communicating Risk: Who, How, When, Where and How Often

Topic 3: Available and Appropriate Risk Communication Methods and Technologies

In this topic, we discuss the methods and technologies available for risk communication, and present examples of situations when each of these methods might be appropriate.

Objective:

  • Discuss the following communication approaches/methods.
    • Written communication
    • Oral communication
    • Non-verbal communication
    • Internal and external communication

Arguably, the most important part of risk communication is taking the time to prepare an effective message. The first step is to understand the objective or purpose for the communication. Next is to consider the audience (message receivers) and to modify the message to address their perceptions, views, and needs. It might be helpful to consider which parts of the message the audience might find positive or negative, interesting, confusing, alarming, or unclear. The sender should decide what facts and information to include in the communication and how best to organize the message. A poorly structured message will fail to obtain the required response or necessary feedback from the audience. It might be helpful to prepare an outline beforehand, paying particular attention to the beginning and ending portions of the message. Finally, before transmitting the message, it is important to edit and proofread it. In particular situations, it might be a good idea to pre-test the message.

Two main media are used for verbal communication: written and oral. Nonverbal communication is also an important consideration that can influence the outcome of even the most carefully planned message. Click through the Communication Methods to learn more.
